Spoken Word- Poetry

"The Type" by Sarah Kay:
"You are not the problem. You are not the Answer..... You are a woman." In this poem Sarah Kay talks about a how women should be a woman, not a man's version of a woman. Throughout the poem she uses a serious mood yet a soft and hopeful one. "You can grow up to be the type of woman men want," but be careful because men and women want different things. The theme of this poem is "know you are the type of woman who is searching for a place to call yours" and find a man who wants the same. I really enjoyed how she shows the differences in the man to woman wants and desires and how women morph to the wants of a man when they don't have to in the end.

"When Love Arrives" by Sarah Kay:
I knew what love looked like, or so I thought. Sarah and Phil create an intense mood with underlying comedy to discuss how people think they "[know] exactly what love looks like" when they are growing up, only to find out love is nothing like what they thought it would be. The theme of this poem is don't going looking for love because you won't find it, let love find you. This poem spoke to me because it is one hundred percent true; people think they know what love looks like when they're young because they don't know what love is. "Love is not who you are expecting" though, Sarah and Phil state clearly through this poem the love isn't perfect, but love, it's perfect.

"If I Should Have a Daughter" by Sarah Kay:
Sometimes i too scared to step outside the door of my house, but my mom stands by me and makes me brave. In this poem Sarah explains how "if [she] should have a daughter" she will teach her to be bold and brave but help her along the way if it is necessary. She talks using a hopeful and nurturing tone and mood. The theme in this poem is the world is a scary place but if you look close and explore you will find happiness. Don't be afraid to step out and fail because you have to fall every once in awhile. I liked this poem because it touches on almost all the emotional aspects of a teenage girl. My "hand will always be to small to catch the pain [I] want to heal" but that doesn't mean i shouldn't try.
